Frequently Asked Questions About Assisted Living
What is assisted living?
We know finding the right place for you or your loved one can be difficult. Many have questions about assisted living, retirement homes, hospice and the options available today. Cedar Manor specializes in assisted living, a form of long-term senior care that assists with meals, medication management, bathing, dressing and transportation.
How is care paid for at Cedar Manor?
Medicare does not typically cover the costs of assisted living expenses. Cedar Manor is a private pay facility. Many residents use long-term care insurance reimbursements combined with any available veteran benefits to offset the costs of assisted living.
Are there any admissions requirements for Cedar Manor?
Before admission, each prospective resident is assessed by a trained, licensed staff member, taking into account the Virginia Universal Assessment Inventory (UAI) and discussions with your loved one and family members. A physical examination and record of tuberculosis (TB) screening or chest X-ray within 30 days of the date of admission are also required. Our admissions coordinator handles all of the necessary medical documentation so you can focus on your loved one during the transition to Cedar Manor.
Are other medical services offered?
Yes, as a convenience to our seniors and elders , primary care, dentistry, podiatry and rehabilitation services such as therapy services are regularly offered onsite by visiting medical professionals. Additional medical services such as nutritional services, wound care, diabetes care, IV therapy, or home and hospice care are coordinated through our medical team to meet each resident’s individual health needs. These services are often paid by Medicare.
Can a resident be admitted from home?
Yes, when a loved one no longer wants the responsibility of maintaining a household and may need additional help with daily routines, some families seek the safety and convenience of an assisted living community. The decision to move to assisted living can be difficult. We work with families and loved ones to meet their timelines and ensure a seamless and smooth transition from their previous home to ours at Cedar Manor.
My mom is in a rehab center, and it’s not safe for her to go back home. What do I do?
Cedar Manor offers assisted living and respite care for those who may need assistance with activities of daily living. Our staff regularly works with area rehabilitation facilities and physicians to help transition those who need to continue their care to Cedar Manor for ongoing assistance.
Is therapy for seniors and elders provided at Cedar Manor?
While we do not have on-site rehabilitation, therapy services including speech, occupational and physical therapy are available upon request. Since Cedar Manor is home to residents, home health and hospice care are also available here just as they would be at a private home.
Who will be taking care of my loved one?
Our care team is led by a medical director who is a registered nurse. She and our director of nursing oversee residents’ care. Licensed practice nurses, certified nurse aids and care partners provide 24-hour assistance to residents. Our dietary manager provides healthy and appealing daily menus including fresh and seasonal produce. Nutritionists from Chesapeake Regional Healthcare regularly visit Cedar Manor to provide input and guidance for special dietary needs of some residents.
Can residents continue to use their primary care physician?
Many residents continue to see their primary care physicians, while others choose to transition to primary care physicians who visit Cedar Manor weekly and are on-call nightly for more urgent matters. Care at Cedar Manor is also backed by the quality medical care provided by the well-respected doctors, nurses and medical team at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare.
Can seniors and elders leave for birthdays, vacations or other reasons?
Cedar Manor is home to residents who are encouraged to continue their active lives. Residents are welcome to come and go as they are able, taking outings and family vacations as they always have. Many residents still drive and choose to keep their vehicles parked on site for easy access to nearby shopping, dining and entertainment.
Are there any additional fees for social outings?
Cedar Manor offers many opportunities for seniors and elders to remain engaged in our community by dining out, shopping and enjoying other local entertainment. We offer transportation and staff support at no additional cost. Residents are responsible for the cost of their meals and other off-site purchases.
